A man and a woman were treated for smoke inhalation after their log burner set fire to their house in Sidney Road, Rochester.

Firefighters said the couple were lucky to escape the blaze without worse injury, as the house was not fitted with a smoke alarm - and the fire broke out as they slept.

Crews were called at about 3.20am and battled the fire throughout the early hours of this morning.

It is thought the fire was caused by the flue from a log burner, which ignited the joist between the ground and first floor.

Two bedrooms were damaged by fire and a third bedroom was damaged by smoke.

The couple - aged in their 50s - were taken to hospital for treatment.
