A man who broke out of the dock to avoid being sent back to prison has handed himself into police.

Adam Savage, from Chatham, went on the run as magistrates were sentencing him for breaching a suspended sentence order imposed earlier this year.

Medway Magistrates' Court (16110521)

KentOnline yesterday reported on the incident which happened at Medway Magistrates' Court last Wednesday.

But the 34-year-old is now in custody again after he attended Medway Police Station last night.

Savage, of no fixed address, gave himself up at 12.30am and was arrested for failing to attend court and being unlawfully at large, police confirmed.

The convict broke free from the dock inside court two despite being guarded by two officers.

Savage was brought into the courtroom from the cells accompanied by the officers but bashed through the door and raced out of the court building in The Brook in Chatham town centre.

The officers gave chase but were unable to apprehend Savage.

Police also attended following the drama shortly after 11.30am on Wednesday, August 28 and searched the area but could not locate him.

Geo Amey, the firm contracted by the Ministry of Justice to provide security at the court, says it is investigating the breach.

A spokesman for the company said they will be carrying out a review of what happened which is expected to be completed within the next couple of weeks.

Court papers show Savage was being sentenced after failing to comply with a supervision order relating to a previous conviction.

The documents state he had not turned up for five appointments in July arranged by the probation service.

Magistrates were reading out the sentence, telling Savage he would be returning to prison for 45 days.

Police say no new charges have been made and are continuing inquiries.
