Second accident in Strood near Medway City Estate causes more delays for motorists

Two crashes have caused severe delays this morning - with the Medway tunnel closed for a while.

The first crash on Antonys Way, near the Medway Tunnel in Strood, happened shortly before 7.40am and involved a cyclist and another vehicle.

About half an hour later four vehicles crashed on the opposite side of the road, leading to the Medway Tunnel. They are the latest incidents to cause traffic chaos in the already choked roads in and around the Medway City Estate.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene on Antonys Way for the first accident, and officers stopped traffic entering the estate as they dealt with the injured cyclist, for a while.

It is understood a blue Toyota was in collision with the bike.

Officers stopped traffic coming out of the Medway Tunnel on the A289 and diverted it around the roundabout.

Motorists were then able to drive back up onto Berwick Way and onto the Wainscott bypass as a diversion.

It is understood the cyclist is not seriously injured and was treated paramedics.

Police allowed traffic back onto Antonys Way at about 8.15am.

Then, about half-an-hour later another crash happened on the approach road to the Medway Tunnel.

A four-vehicle smash happened on the Gillingham-bound carriageway of the on the A289 and has closed the road for a time.

The smash happened at about 8.44am on the carriageway leading to the Medway Tunnel and traffic delays soon built up.

It is understood a lorry and three cars are involved in the accident and police said the road was closed for a period while they deal with the crash scene.

It is not thought anyone was seriously injured during the smash and one man suffered minor injuries.
