Comedian Daniel O’Reilly has “killed off” his controversial character, Dapper Laughs, after he caused a storm by making jokes about rape and homelessness.
He was due to do a meet and greet as the character at Casino Rooms, Rochester on Saturday December 20 but has cancelled all appearances.
O’Reilly, 25, from Clapham Common told BBC Newsnight’s Emily Maitlis on Tuesday that he will no longer be performing as Dapper Laughs.
He said: “I didn’t see it as me that was doing it. I was creating this character. Not only do I not want to carry on with it, I don’t want to be seen to approve of it.
“It was a type of comedy I shouldn’t have been doing. I’m not going to do what maybe other comedians would do and stand behind it and say, ‘Do you know what, if you don’t like it switch off’.”
He spoke to the programme after his tour was cancelled and ITV dropped the second series of his tv dating show, On The Pull.
Dapper Laughs rose to internet infamy with his six-second Vines about pulling women - social media site Vine allows users to share six second videos.
The character had 1,600,000 Facebook fans and 575,000 followers on Vine and his single Proper Moist entered the UK Singles Chart at number 15 earlier this year.
Casino Rooms manager Aaron Stone said: "Daniel O’Reilly has cancelled his tour and all personal appearances for Dapper Laughs."
