An animal charity has been contacted after a deer was spotted darting across busy roads in a residential area.

The animal was seen in gardens and running along several streets in Rochester.

People have reported seeing it in Arethusa Road, City Way, Maidstone Road and around St William's Way.

Resident Violet Lloyd, who lives off St William's Way, captured footage of the creature on her doorbell camera.

It crossed her driveway and then wandered around her lawn. Despite being miles from its nearest natural habitat, it did not look in distress.

She said: "I checked the camera thinking it would be a cat or a fox – we have a lot of foxes around this way. But then I was surprised to see it was a deer."

The deer was snapped in the grounds of the Wisdom Hospice

One woman said she saw it running across Maidstone Road and into the Cookham Wood area at about 7.50am, while another said she saw it looking terrified running down Arethusa Road towards The Tideway.

It was also in the grounds of the Wisdom Hospice in High Bank where a nurse managed to snap a photo of it before it disappeared.

The nurse was just finishing her night-shift at around 5am when she spotted it out of the window.

Emma Dengate, fundraising co-ordinator for The Friends of the Wisdom Hospice, said: "He seemed quite content and happy. We have all been wondering where he came from and where he went though."

The Kent Wildlife Rescue Service has been contacted and volunteers have been out looking for the animal.
