A personal trainer had agreed to be the designated driver when he went to a party with his friends - but ended up crashing his car while over the drink-drive limit.

Sanual Banagkeng, 32, had arranged for his friends to stay at his house in Chatham Hill so they could all go to a party nearby. But during the early hours of Sunday, July 9, as he was driving home, he crashed his silver BMW at the roundabout by Luton Arches in Chatham.

Banagkeng told police he had swerved to avoid another car and lost control. He careered across the roundabout, before hitting a road sign.

He was breathalysed at the scene and arrested. He appeared before magistrates in Medway on Tuesday, where he pleaded guilty to drink-driving. Banagkeng gave a reading of 49 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, when the legal limit is 35.

Lynda Huppatz prosecuting, said: “He was taking them home [his friends]. It was about 4.50am and as he approached the roundabout he says someone cut in front of him and he had swerve to miss it.

“He admitted to police it was his car and said he’d drunk two Guinnesses and didn’t know if he had been over the limit, he’d arranged to be chauffeur for the night.”

Magistrates banned Banagkeng from driving for 12 months and fined him £212 and ordered he pay £85 costs.
