Disabled boy's home plea
Published: 07:31, 13 January 2012
A family has made a heartfelt plea for help to give their disabled son the new home he desperately needs.
Lisa and Rob Edmonds, whose son Cameron is battling a muscle-wasting disease, have been unable to move into the bungalow they bought more than a year ago. They have been working tirelessly to renovate the house but time is running out as Cameron’s condition steadily worsens.
The 11-year-old, known as Cam, suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy and is not expected to live much past his 21st birthday. Cam, who inspired a fundraising campaign to take him on a dream trip to Australia in 2008, is unable to walk on his own and has to crawl up the stairs to bed each night.
Lisa, 39, of Edinburgh Road, Chatham, said: “Cam is deteriorating fast, and can now barely walk. Crawling up the stairs and along the passage to his bedroom leaves Cam physically exhausted.
“He’s the sort of boy who doesn’t always tell you if something is wrong because he doesn’t want to upset us, but sometimes he will just sit at the bottom of the stairs and cry.
“Cam has enough to deal with simply living with his condition everyday, without the added strain of being stuck here.”
The Edmonds bought the run-down bungalow in October 2010, so Cam could be nearer his specialist school in Gravesend. They have been given a grant to adapt the entrance and create a wet room, but have to find the funds to complete the rest of the work themselves so they are looking for help from businesses and tradesman.
Lisa said: “Funds are running drastically low and we are up against the clock.”
And she added: “I cannot even begin to tell you the difference being in the bungalow will make. It will change Cam’s life.”
