Police officers and coastguards helped a distressed man spotted on a motorway bridge and an MP has decided to take action.

The distressed man was seen on the coast-bound carriageway of the M2 Bridge in Strood last night.

This comes days after a man died from falling off the same bridge.

The road was closed for three hours on Tuesday while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Police were called last night at around 10pm and closed the carriageways to traffic while officers spoke to the man.

Spokesman Martin Very said: "He was later passed into the care of medical staff and the carriageway was reopened at 12.18am today."

A woman also fell from the bridge in June but was pulled out the water and survived.

Chatham MP Tracey Crouch champions and supports mental wellbeing schemes across the Towns.

She said: "It is heartbreaking to read of another person in distress losing their life from the M2 bridge.

"Obviously we must do all we can to provide better support services for those who find themselves struggling in a wider context, clearly something needs to be done in the immediate future to prevent further lives being lost from the bridge.

"I have written to Highways England to highlight the vulnerabilities of the M2 bridge and ask for both preventative and support measures to be considered along its stretch, including the connection of a 24 hour crisis telephone”
