The much-loved star, who has a home in the Meopham area, also had a look around the unique pub's on-site zoo and chatted with staff.

Fenn Bell owner Andy Cowell told KentOnline that Sir Michael had come specifically to see the animals.

He described how the arrival of the "true superstar" yesterday delighted staff.

"He said he had heard about the zoo and come out to see it.

"He was really interested in the animals and what we do - the history behind them."

With walking stick in hand, Sir Michael spent about 90 minutes at the Fenn Bell, looking round the zoo despite the heavy rain.

The actor, who has won four Baftas, then popped into the pub for a cup of tea and talked to staff, as well as posing for pictures.

"The guys were really interested in his life and particularly playing Dumbledore," said Mr Cowell.

"He kept saying: 'I did do other things you know!'

"An absolutely true superstar with what he's achieved in his life, and he's sat here, chatting with all the girls."
