EDF apologises after power cut hits Rochester homes

Eighteen homes in Rochester were finally able to switch the kettle back on today after going without power for more than 16 hours.

A number of people living in Orion Road, Rochester, were forced to get out the candles with not electricity since 7pm on Wednesday evening.

The electricity provider, EDF Energy, estimate the he maximum number of customers affected is 18 households.

One affected resident, said: “Last night my son and I lit candles for light and we played cards.

“I was able to use my computer and DS Lite for a while, but the power in the batteries soon ran out.”

A spokesman for EDF Energy, said: “A localised fault on an underground electricity cable interrupted supplies to up to 18 customers in the Orion Road area of Rochester at 7pm yesterday.

“We apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused.”

Like all power distribution companies EDF Energy operate to Guaranteed Standards set by the regulator, Ofgem which sets the level of payments and when that would apply.

If it takes more than 18 hours to restore power customers, they can claim a Guaranteed Standard payment of £50 for a residential customer, or £100 for business customers.
