Fire at Brompton Academy

AROUND 25 firefighters tackled a blaze at Brompton Academy last night (Thursday).
Crews from Medway and Strood fire stations were called to the site in Malborough Road, Gillingham, at 7.10pm and found a fire on the first floor of a partially demolished part of the building.
Firefighters used breathing apparatus and jets and a hydrant to fight the inferno.
The worst of the fire was contained to the disused part of the building, but there was some slight structural damage to the part of the school which is currently in use.
Some of the buildings on the site are being demolished to make way for brand new facilities. Work is due to be finished by Christmas 2013.
Steve Jordan, a firefighter at Strood fire station, said: “It looked as though there had been some sort of structural shift. Some of the bricks have moved so it will need to be reassessed by a structural engineer.”
The Urban Search and Rescue team arrived at the scene at 10:50pm and used specialist cutting gear to check voids in the building.
Medway and Strood firefighters left the scene at 11.10pm. Investigators are now looking into the cause of the blaze.
