A man walked into Strood fire station and asked firefighters to cut off his new ring as it was stuck on his finger.

The 20-year-old who has not been named, was given it the previous week by his girlfriend's parents but his finger became swollen and it became stuck.

He walked into the station after previously going to Medway Maritime Hospital to see if staff could help him there.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Nurses at hospital had advised him to come to us so we could cut it off for him.

"We do have a specialist ring cutter but it is designed to cut gold and silver, not stainless steel and after about an hour-and-a-half, we still couldn't get the ring off."

One of the crew went to B&Q to borrow a Dremel cutting tool to get it off.

The spokesman added: "Once we'd got that it only took about 10 minutes to get the ring off, he was very grateful, he took it with him."
