A workman caused a gas leak at a bungalow in Strood while he was pulling up old asbestos tiles from the floor of the home.

The contractor was working at a property in Holly Road, when he accidentally chiselled through a gas pipe on Tuesday and called firefighters for help.

A crew from Strood fire station was called out to the bungalow at about 9.40am.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: "The gas had leaked inside the property and we isolated the supply at the main.

"We then ventilated the property to make sure the area was safe and left the contractor there to wait for the gas company to arrive."
