Fire crews finally leave scene of blaze at Chatham Docks recycling site

Firefighters have finally left the scene of a blaze at a recycling site almost 24 hours after it started.

Eight fire engines were at Chatham Docks at the height of the incident which led to residents on nearby St Mary’s Island being told to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke.

The advice was lifted after operations were completed shortly before 7pm today.

However, crews will continue to revisit the site to ensure all hotspots are dampened down.

A water safety unit was also part of the firefighting team, and crews wearing breathing apparatus used main jets to extinguish the flames.

A fire service spokesman said: “There were no reported injuries and the cause is not yet known.
