Fire crews called to Maidstone Road in Rainham to reports of a utility room fire

Fire crews attended a house fire thought to be caused by a tumble dryer.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service were called to Maidstone Road, Rainham at 4.20am this morning.

Two fire engines and crews wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire in the utility room of the house.

Two fire crews were called to the property in Maidstone Road, Gillingham (7865669)

A man and woman living at the house were able to close the door of the utility room to stop the fire spreading to other parts of the house.

The man was treated for smoke inhalation and was handed into the care of paramedics, but did not need to go to hospital.

The fire was put out by 5.15am.

Leanne McMahon, KFRS Group manager for community safety said: "If there’s a fire in your home and it’s safe to do so, contain it by closing doors as you leave the property to reduce fire spread.

"Such a simple step can make a huge difference to the outcome of a fire."
