Firefighters were called after a poorly-discarded cigarette set a mattress on fire.

Three fire engines attended a flat in Chatham High Street at about 6.30pm yesterday.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet to douse the flames.

They left the scene just before 9pm.

No injuries were reported.
