A man will appear in court accused of breaking into a house and stealing money after offering to carry out work in a garden.

Amos Smith, of Cobden Road, Chatham is alleged to have targeted a resident as they walked home in Rochester on June 4.

Police say Smith, 41, made an "unsolicited offer" to cut the grass in the victim's garden and he entered the property in Weller Avenue.

It has been claimed cash was taken by the intruder despite the elderly victim saying they did not want any work to take place.

Detectives investigating the incident identified Smith as a possible suspect and arrested him yesterday (Wednesday) on suspicion of two offences.

He was charged with burglary and fraud by false representation and appeared at Medway Magistrates' Court today.

It is alleged the suspect was not a genuine worker, had forced his way into the house and had reportedly ordered to be given money but did not carry out any work.

He was remanded to appear on October 1 at Maidstone Crown Court.
