A council is set to receive its share of a multi-million pound pot to reach out to “increasingly invisible” young people at risk of violent crime.

Medway Council has been awarded £50,000 to run face-to-face youth work across its parks and Chatham and Gillingham town centres.

It forms part of the £6.5 million fund allocated by the Youth Endowment Fund.

With access to schools restricted some young people are deemed to be at increased risk of violence and have become "increasingly invisible”, according to the charity.

Medway Council has been running 30 online support sessions each week during the pandemic and is one of 130 organisations to tap into the grant.

Cllr Josie Iles, the council's lead member for children's services, said: "Both our online sessions and the new face-to-face activities support our aspiration for Medway to become a child-friendly city, putting our young people at the centre of everything we do.

"We are committed to ensuring every child has the best start in life and achieves their full potential.”
