Residents have said they are "saddened" as their village is targeted by fly-tippers.

A sofa and its cushions, multiple gas canisters, a TV, cardboard boxes and bin bags have been dumped on private land in West Street, Cliffe.

It was spotted yesterday by a resident – who did not wish to be named – behind some barbed wire fencing in separate places along the road.

She said: "It is dreadful. We all love our village, that is why we live here. To witness this fly tipping dumped on the side of West Street on our walk around the village has really saddened us.

"I am aware of odd bits of fly-tipping and I always report it. I absolutely hate it with a passion.

"Often on our walks to Cliffe Pools there is rubbish dumped. I just do not get these people's mentality."

The resident reported the two incidents to Medway Council through its Fix My Street website and received a response from its enforcement team saying they will "investigate in due course."

It added: "Due to a high volume of work all inquiries will be prioritised, those cases having the most detrimental impact will be dealt with first."

There has also been reports of "dozens and dozens" of small wine bottles left on the road along the same stretch.

Medway Council’s head of regulatory services, Ian Gilmore said: "We are aware of a fly-tipping incident on private land in West Street, Cliffe.

"We investigate all fly-tipping incidents and prosecute offenders, wherever possible."

Residents are being asked to continue to report fly-tipping incidents to the council via its website.

Anyone with information about the incident in West Street is asked to contact the environmental enforcement team by calling 01634 333333.
