It has been busy at the Medway polling stations today, as voters turn up to have their voices heard in the much anticipated EU referendum.

Today’s referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU is the culmination of months of intense debate.

Across Medway, 115 polling stations have been set up, three more than in the 2015 general election.

Volunteers at the Borstal Village Hall polling station said it had been a busy start to the day and that they had been busier than at last year’s election.

One polling station is relocating because flooding is causing problems with access.

Due to the heavy rainfall the polling station at Frindsbury Cricket Club where the field is flooded, will close at 3pm and move to St Philip’s and St James’ Church further up Upnor Road.

More than 152,000 polling cards have been delivered to Medway residents, and 230,150 ballot papers have been printed.

Voting started at 7am this morning and will continue throughout the day until the polls close at 10pm.

The Medway results will be announced by the returning officer at Medway Park in Gillingham where the votes are to be counted.

Votes will be counted and declared by local councils but will have to be validated by a regional count at Southampton before being formally announced.

The Electoral Commission has forecast the results in Kent will mostly be declared between 3am and 4am.

But in Medway, the result is expected to be between 5am and 6am as it covers a larger area.

We will be having a full results service on www.kentonline.co.uk along with analysis and reaction from our reporters around the county.
