A stalwart Gills fan has been named as the victim of a crash on Four Elms Hill.

Brian Durden was crossing the road in Chattenden Lane, near Hoo, at around 6pm yesterday, near his Wainscott home.

Emergency services were called at 6.10pm to the eastbound carriageway in Chattenden.

The 69-year-old was hit by a black Peugeot 208 GTI and died at the scene.

A statement on the Gills Independent supporter's club website paid tribute to the main they named "Mr Gillingham".

It read: "Sadly we have some awful news to pass on. Brian Durden, one of our long term members and regular traveller with the GISC away travel coach, was involved in an accident near his Wainscott home last night and has sadly passed away.

"This news will come as an awful shock to all who knew Brian. Brian was a lovely person who was the backbone of our away support. He was awarded the GISC Supporter of the Year award in 2007-2008 and will be instantly recognisable to any Gills supporter.

"Brian is, and always will be, Mr Gillingham. Our condolences go to all his friends and family. RIP Brian - You will be greatly missed by us all.

"We will update this with information on where to send cards and tributes once known."

A 39-year-old man from Rochester was arrested in connection with the collision and remains in custody.

Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are appealing for any witnesses to come forward who may have seen the collision or the vehicle travelling in the Medway towns area beforehand.
