A health centre requires improvement, according to health watchdog inspectors.

The Princes Park Medical Centre, Walderslade, which has been under new management for a year, has just undergone a review by the Care Quality Commission.

The practice in Dove Close, which has 3,277 registered patients, was found to have shortfalls in three out of five categories but its practices for being effective and caring were ruled good.

Among faults noted were lack of training for reception staff and uncollected prescriptions not being properly monitored.

The inspection was carried out on January 10 and has just been published.

The report said: "Staff dealt with patients with kindness and respect. However, patient satisfaction was below average, and the practice did not have a clear plan of action on how to improve this."

It continued: "The areas where the provider must make improvements are: ensure that care and treatment is provided in a safe way; establish effective systems and processes to ensure good governance in accordance with the fundamental standards of care; ensure recruitment procedures are established and operated effectively to ensure only fit and proper persons are employed."

It also said the provider should, among other things, review and improve the uptake of cervical screening and the childhood immunisation programme; continue to take action to improve cancer care reviews; update the whistleblowing policy and continue to work towards establishing an effective patient participation group."

The surgery is run by a manager from Medway Community Healthcare who provides support to the practice management team.
