HMS Medway has positioned itself to be ready to support the people of the Cayman Islands as Hurricane Ian looms.

Named after the Kent river, the ship is stocked with items to provide aid to anyone impacted by the devastating category four storm.

The vessel is equipped with everything from medical equipment to materials to clear blocked roads.

It houses a regular crew of 45 sailors plus up to 50 Royal Marines, can help with emergency communications, planning, provide skilled engineers and equipment as well as supply food, fresh water and trained medics.

A spokesperson from the Military of Defence said: "Her crew has already provided vital infrastructure support to the Turks and Caicos Islands following Hurricane Fiona.

"HMS Medway is ready to support the people of the Cayman Islands as Hurricane Ian approaches."

The ship is now permanently deployed to the Caribbean.

The vessel's crew is responsible for anti-drug smuggling operations and humanitarian relief efforts on behalf of the Royal Navy.

The ship made its voyage across the pond more than two years ago.

Hurricane Ian is predicted to hit the south-eastern states of America spanning from Atlanta to Florida.
