An 80-year-old grandmother was punched in the face by an intruder in her back garden.

Irene Smallman, of Petham Green, Twydall, was enjoying a late night cigarette with the back door open, on Wednesday, when she heard her gate open.

Initially she thought it was her carer but when she called out a man emerged from the shadows, at around 11.30pm.

He ran at her and then punched her in the face.

Mrs Smallman was left traumatised and severely bruised.

Her grandson Chay Allen said: "It is horrible, but she's holding up, she's a tough cookie.

"She's got all her family round her.

"We'll be putting in some CCTV and safety measures so nothing like this happens again."

Police spokesman Steve Knight said: "It was reported that a male wearing a hooded top entered the back garden of a property, where he was approached by the elderly woman who lives there.

"He is then alleged to have punched her, causing an injury to the victim’s face.

"Officers attended and carried out a thorough search of the local area but were unable to trace the person responsible."
