Immigration officers acting on a tip-off visited a shop in Gillingham and found a Indian man working illegally.

The Home Office enforcement officers visited the Jeffery Grocery & Off Licence in Jeffery Street, Gillingham, on Tuesday to carry out checks on staff and found a 47-year-old Indian man working there.

He was arrested, and has been placed on temporary release whilst steps are taken to secure his removal from the country.

He will have to report regularly to the Home Office during this period.

His employer has been served with a civil penalty notice for employing him illegally and this means the employer is liable for a fine of up to £10,000 unless evidence is provided that legally required pre-employment checks were carried out.
