First there was Brexit and now there could be Mexit if local authority chiefs get their way.

It was revealed over the weekend that Medway Council is exploring the possibility of applying for independence.

Already a unitary authority with the same powers as neighbouring Kent, it could be about to invoke Article 51 of the Local Government Act 1992, section C, subsection 4.

This would see the area become self-governing in a similar way Scotland and Wales have devolution.

Although still aligned to the UK, Medway would raise its own taxes, have its own police force and be able to apply for membership of the European Union.

Furthermore, it would be able to have its own flag and commission a national anthem to be played on days of 'national' celebration such as before and after the annual Castle Concerts.

An insider at Gun Wharf, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "It's really exciting news and the culmination of 20 years of planning since Medway came into existence.

Jools could provide Medway's national anthem

"In theory, the leader of the party which wins on May 2 could become Prime Minister or First Minister.

"There's already talk about getting Cooling Castle resident Jools Holland to write the new anthem, which perhaps could be performed by Blue's Lee Ryan who comes from Chatham.

"Maybe it could be to the tune of Blue's hit 'All Rise'? Something like 'All rise, people of Medway, all rise to the sound of freedom...'

"There's also lots of chat about what the flag would look like - maybe a naval ship against a pink background. Ship because of Medway's past and pink because I personally like the colour."

Tory leader Cllr Alan Jarrett and his Labour nemesis Cllr Vince Maple could be reached for comment.

But later this year there is genuine chance one of them could join world leaders at the G20 summit as it becomes the G21.

They could fly from Rochester International Airport aboard the 'national airline' which would comprise the name Medway and vacation - Medication Airways.

UPDATE: For those who didn't realise - April Fools!
