Patients faced long delays with some told to 'come back Monday' as they queued up for hours for their jab at Medway's mass vaccine hub.

The centre, which is based in the Pentagon Centre in Chatham, was reported to be stretched beyond its capacity earlier as residents faced long waits to be vaccinated.

One young mum said she was told it would be an hour long wait but ended up queuing double the time.

At full capacity it is projected the vaccine hub can inoculate upwards of 2,000 people a day.

The facilities were officially opened in March by the Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust (KCHFT), who run the site alongside four other mass vaccine centres across the county.

But the centre, which was singled out for special praise for its vaccine programme at a Downing Street press conference last month, appeared to hit a hitch earlier today.

In a post on social media, it said: "We have some queues forming, as our vaccine delivery was held up, just a little bit.

"If you don't want to wait, please cancel and rebook for next week; there are spaces available. We apologise for any inconvenience."

But one woman who attended the Pentagon Centre earlier said people were reluctant to come back another day.

The resident, who did not want to be named, waited for two hours with her eight-month-old daughter.

She said: "I was told at the beginning of the queue it would be an hour, but it was two and then an extra half hour inside with the 15 minutes wait afterwards.

"The people were lovely and professional inside, but the information outside in the queue wasn’t the best.

"People were being told they could come back on Monday but in the time I was there I only saw one person accept, people were very keen to get their jab."

Patients in Medway - the largest conurbation in the south east - have access to the network of GP practices across the Towns, pharmacy vaccine centres, and the Gravesend mass centre, which opened in early February.

Its vaccine centre was opened after a campaign fought by Medway's MPs to bring a centre to the hard-hit Towns.

About 1,200 weekend appointments are also available at Medway Maritime Hospital.
