Lorry carrying household waste has burst into flames on the M2 at Gillingham

A lorry has caught alight on the M2 near Gillingham this afternoon.

Firefighters and police were called out to the London-bound carriageway near to the Medway Services after the trailer of the lorry burst into flames.

The lorry, which was carrying household waste caught alight at about 3.05pm between Junction 5 for Sittingbourne and Junction 4 for Gillingham.

Firefighters are still on the scene fighting the flames and the trailer of the lorry was well alight when they arrived on the scene.

The driver of the lorry was not injured but the blaze is causing delays for motorist.

James Walker, spokesman for police, said: "Kent Police was called to a lorry fire on the M2 London-bound at 3.17pm.

"The incident was reported to be taking place on the hard shoulder close to junction 5.

"Officers are currently at the scene, alongside patrols from Kent Fire and Rescue Service."
