A loud explosion heard on the Hoo Peninsula last night caused a temporary dip in supplies to homes across the Towns

People living in the Hoo area say they heard a large bang at about midnight and the noise even prompted police and firefighters to head to the scene.

Police received a report of a loud noise in the area shortly after midnight and officers attended the area with firefighters as a precaution.

Billy Palmer who lives in Hoo, also heard the explosion, he said: Anyone know what the large explosion was down Kingsnorth?

"It knocked the power out in Hoo, Cliffe, Chatham and Walderslade and the fire brigade and police were seen heading to the power station."

One woman who contacted the power supplier to find out what was going on was @PhoebeLM3 she too had a temporary power failure.

This morning a spokesman for UK Power Networks, said the loud bang was caused by a fault at an electricity substation.

She added: "A fault developed on a piece of equipment at an electricity substation at about midnight.

"This caused a temporary dip in supply to properties in the area, however no power supplies were lost.

"UK Power Networks engineers have turned off the faulty part of the network to complete repairs. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused."
