Traffic held on M2 coastbound at Junction 2 for Strood following lorry crash

A man has been taken to hospital following a crash between two lorries on a motorway.

The M2 coastbound was closed between Junction 1 and Junction 2 near Strood for several hours, but reopened overnight.

The emergency services were in attendance along with National Highways traffic officers.

Police confirmed its officers were called just before 6pm to reports of a crash near Junction 2.

They attended along with paramedics and firefighters.

A spokesman said: “Kent Police was called to a report of a collision involving two lorries near Junction 2 of the coastbound M2 at Strood at 5.55pm on Tuesday 23 May 2023.

“Officers attended along with South East Coast Ambulance Service and a man was taken to a local hospital with injuries not reported to be serious.

“The M2 coastbound was closed between Junctions 1 and 2 during the recovery.”

A fire service spokesman confirmed a person was rescued from one of the vehicles and passed into the care of medics, before being taken to hospital.

Five fire engines were sent to the scene, along with a technical rescue unit.

Traffic was held on the London-bound carriageway to allow the air ambulance to land but was later released.

The coastbound carriageway remained closed while the emergency services worked at the scene, but reopened overnight.

A witness who drove past at around 6pm said there had been a “nasty crash” and the front of one vehicle had suffered extensive damage.

Motorists were diverted off the motorway at Junction 1 and told to follow the A289, A2, A278, before re-joining the M2 at Junction 4 for Gillingham.
