A motorway bridge has reopened four hours after it was closed when a distressed man was spotted in the road.

Police shut the M2 bridge in both directions between Strood and Borstal, including the slip road, at around 3.30pm.

An air ambulance has landed under the bridge at Junction 2 (Strood/Rochester).

Officers received a report of a man in distress at around 3.30pm.

An eyewitness said: "The traffic's humongous and it's still not moving.

"People going home from work are all standing outside their vehicles and it's going back for miles.

"The traffic's so bad that I can't see how many police cars are there."

Traffic was diverted off the motorway at junction 3 (Rochester/Chatham) and at one stage delays were stretching back to J4 (Gillingham).

Traffic trapped at J3 was released as of 6.45pm and on the London-bound carriageway at 7.40pm.

The closure affected all routes through Chatham, including Blue Bell Hill and Rochester Bridge.

Routes out of the Medway Estate were also gridlocked, as traffic was diverted through the Medway Tunnel.

Motorists on the M2 were urged to use the M20 London-bound between J6 and J4, and A228 northbound, and rejoin the motorway at J2.

Update: Police have confirmed a man has died after falling from the bridge.
