M2 coastbound closed between Junction 3, Rochester and Chatham, and Junction 4, Gillingham, after accident

The M2 has reopened after a crash earlier today.

Emergency services were called at 11.28am to the crash between Junction 3 for Chatham and Rochester, and Junction 4, for Gillingham on the coastbound carriageway.

Both carriageways were closed and vehicles had to u-turn to get out of the queues.

The London-bound carriageway reopened at around 2.15pm and the coastbound carriageway just after 7.30pm.

It was previously reported that a car had hit the central reservation, however, police have confirmed that two cars were involved in a collision.

Police spokesman, James Walker, said: "A closure is being enforced on the coastbound M2 following a serious collision near Blue Bell Hill.

"The incident was reported to us at 11.28am today and is said to have involved two cars.

"It took place on the coastbound carriageway, between junctions 3 and 4, and we attended alongside South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance.

"To ensure public safety, and allow an investigation to take place, we have closed the coastbound M2 between junctions 3 and 4.

"Motorists are advised to expect delays and, where possible, use an alternative route.

"The London-bound carriageway was also closed but had reopened by 2.15pm."

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or who has dashcam footage that may have captured it, is asked to call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 01622 798538 quoting 16-0476.

South East Coast Ambulance Service have been contacted for a comment.
