There will be more misery for motorists as a busy route shuts again for four weeks.

Luton Road in Chatham will be closed from next Monday following a month-long closure last year as part of project to help improve road safety.

It will be shut from Upper Luton Road to Castle Road for four weeks and then have temporary traffic lights for a further two weeks at various locations along the street.

They are planned to be kept small, wherever works are taking place, to maintain access for the side roads.

Alex Constantinides, Medway Council’s interim head of highways and traffic, said: "We are carrying out improvement works in Luton Road, including installing traffic-calming measures, resurfacing footways and improving existing pedestrian crossings.

"We have arranged for the works to be carried out during the school holidays to minimise disruption and help keep traffic moving in Medway.

"We would like to thank residents, and motorists, for their patience whilst the works are being carried out."

Drivers will be diverted along Capstone Road, Pear Tree Lane, Hempstead Road, Hoath Way and the A2.

Buses will also be using an alternative route, in order to be able to pick up passengers on Luton Road, near the junction of Castle Road.

The diversion will be Street End Road, Wayfield Road, Walderslade Road, Magpie Hall Road, Listmas Road and Castle Road to re-join Luton Road.

Construction will start on July 25 and will last for approximately six weeks.

Further works are programmed in the October half-term period where the roads will be closed from October 24 for one week.
