A man was assaulted by two thugs in an underpass in the centre of Chatham during the early hours of this morning.

The police and paramedics were called out to the passage below New Road, off Claremont Way, shorty after 4am.

The man, in his 40s, was able to make his way to Copperfield House, in Best Street, which backs on to New Road and raise the alarm.

Four patrol cars and an ambulance were seen parked up outside the flats at about 5am and the man was taken to hospital.

A police spokesman said: “Kent Police was called at 4.19am on Saturday, October 15, to a report of a disturbance in the New Road area of Chatham.

“Officers attended and a man in his 40s was taken to hospital after he was allegedly assaulted by two men in an underpass.

“His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening and inquiries into the incident are ongoing.”
