A man who was taken to hospital with a serious head injury after being hit by a train at Chatham railway station remained in a serious condition today.

Emergency services, including the air ambulance, were called to the station just before 1.45pm, after it was reported that a man was on the track and "under a train".

Paramedics treated him on the station platform, having freed him from the track.

He was then taken to hospital with what were believed to life threatening injuries.

The station itself was evacuated and trains suspended, but all lines through have since been reopened.

Some delays and alterations to services are expected until around 6pm.

South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed ambulance crews including the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and the air ambulance attended the scene.

A spokesman said: "A man was treated at the scene for a serious head injury before being taken by road to Kings College Hospital. The air ambulance team joined us in our ambulance to help treat the man en route to hospital."

A spokesman for British Transport Police (BTP) said: "We were called to Chatham station at 1.44pm on Thursday, May 19 to reports of a person being struck by a train.

"Colleagues from Kent Police, South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service also attended, and a man was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious."

The injured man is now in hospital in a "serious but stable condition".
