A man was treated by paramedics after being pulled from a river.

Fire crews helped the patient after it is believed he fell into the River Medway in Chatham yesterday afternoon.

A passer-by rowed out to the man as crowds gathered to watch the dramatic scenes unfold close to The Command House.

The fire service said the man had fallen into the water near Sun Pier at about 3.45pm and a witness threw a life ring into the river but the man had managed to swim to a buoy in the river.

Both men were rescued by fire crews after the good samaritan's boat started taking on water and he was unable to row back to shore safely.

A crew from the fire service's water safety unit attended along with two fire engines.

They used their boat to bring the pair safely back to dry land and were handed over to paramedics.

Ambulance service spokesman Rich Airey said one of the men was assessed at the scene but did not require further treatment in hospital.

Firefighters left the scene at about 4.40pm.
