A man was trapped in his home while a kitchen fire raged.

The man, believed to be around 65, was stuck in his bedroom when the fire broke out and it was his neighbour who called the emergency services.

Around ten firefighters from Medway arrived to the flat in Victoria Street, Gillingham, at 9.25pm last night and rescued him.

The crews had the blaze out by 10.10pm.

The man was treated on site for smoke inhalation and paramedics delivered basic first aid, but he was uninjured and did not need hospital treatment.

The crew was also called out to a fire in a central heating block at the McDonald's restaurant in Gillingham High Street overnight. But it was been extinguished before they arrived.
