A mother-of-two has spoken out about the state of Medway Park’s pools, saying they are filthy on a regular basis.
The woman, 33, from Rochester, took these pictures of the swimming areas and changing rooms showing bins overflowing, litter on the floor, drains clogged with hair and a dirty mop and bucket brimming with dirty brown water.
Andrea Everett, who is also a swimming teacher at a local school, is a regular visitor and says she decided to take the photos after seeing it in such a state more than three times.
Mrs Everett said: “It was in a disgusting state, absolutely filthy.
“It is not the first time I have seen it in this state and I only decided to take the photos because it has been in that dirty state on several occasions.
“It seems every time I visit it is exactly the same and I’m sick of it.
“Dirty changing rooms, mops and buckets full of dirty water and bins are just full to the brim. There are even chemicals left out near the lifeguard high chair and could be picked up by a child.”
She posted her pictures on Facebook and got quite a reaction, with some people agreeing that they too had found it in a similar condition.
Others said other sports centres were the same.
Niina Bastaki wrote: “It isn’t the only leisure centre in Medway which looks like that.
“Most of the changing areas are dirty, run down and generally untidy.
“In Finland, where I come from, every local pool is immaculate, not necessarily state of the art, but one doesn’t fear walking barefoot, nor seeing what is lurking at the bottom of pools turning one’s stomach.
“I was there scuba diving at the weekend and trust me, when you are able to go to the bottom and see the gross stuff there is, it’s a wonder I still swim at all.”
Another woman also posted to say she had seen the pool area and changing rooms at Splashes in Rainham in a similar state. Mrs Everett added: “I took a classroom of children to the centre for a county swimming competition, so people from across the county visited the centre when it was that filthy.
“You would think Medway Council had a higher standard especially as the centre was hosting a county swimming competition.” A spokesman for Medway Council said: “Medway Park is cleaned on a daily basis, through our contractor Medway Norse and centre staff.
“During peak times there my be additional pressures on staff, but the highest levels of cleanliness and hygiene are still expected.
“We will be increasing our monitoring of the quality of cleaning within our leisure centers to ensure our high standards are met.
“We apologise for any temporary lapse in those standards.”
