Visually-impaired skier Kelly Gallagher and her Medway guide, Charlotte Evans have crashed out of the women’s giant slalom, visually impaired event this morning.

The pair had been hoping to win another medal on the final day of the Paralympic Winter Games, but crashed out after Gallagher’s ski came off on the first run down the course.

Meanwhile, 15-year-old Canterbury skier Millie Knight took fifth place in the event, four days after securing another top five finish in the visually impaired slalom.

Despite her disappointment, Charlotte Evans has already been dubbed Medway’s golden girl after previously guiding Kelly to victory in the Winter Paralympics, in Sochi.

Earlier this month, The 22-year-old, from Chatham, and her partner claimed first place in the visually impaired super-G downhill – the first ever Winter Paralympics gold won by Great Britain.

Charlotte, who used to train at Chatham Ski Centre and studied at Rochester Grammar School and MidKent College, had been cheered on mum Siobhan who had flown out to Sochi to support her.

Kelly started skiing aged 17 and began working with Charlotte in late 2010. Since then, the pair have won silver and bronze medals in the 2011 and 2013 world championships as well as World Cup honours.

The Mayor of Medway, Cllr Josie Iles hopes to congratulate Charlotte on her success with an invitation to afternoon tea when she comes back to Britain.
