The mother of an injured six-year-old girl is embroiled in a battle about the mould-ridden condition of her home.

Mother-of-three Janine Davidson, from Gillingham, believes her home's condition is blighting her daughter's recovery from a broken leg and jaw - and is calling on Medway Council to sort it out.

Six-year-old Amy Davidson was injured in a car accident in January and her mother is worried she is not eating or sleeping because of the home's damp and mouldy state.

Amy was hit by a car as she crossed Beechings Way, Gillingham, on January 31 and spent five days on the children's ward at Medway Maritime Hospital with a double break in her leg and a fractured jaw.

She had to undergo an operation to realign her leg and has been in a lot of pain since - something her mother believes is not being helped by her home's state.

Mrs Davidson admits her landlord Medway Council has tried to solve the problem by giving her an extractor fan and have even washed down the walls on occasions, but to no avail.

The 32-year-old - who has three children, aged 13, six and 18 months - said she has been complaining for the past four years and is now sick of being forced to live in such conditions.

She said: "I've had industrial dehumidifiers in the flat. The council put in an extractor fan and have treated the walls, but the problem still comes back.

"You can see the damp around the breeze blocks in the wall, so it's actually within the walls and sometimes the mould and wet drips down from the ceiling in the corners. I've just had enough of living like this."

Mrs Davidson added: "The council sent a contractor out once and he was a mould specialist and he told me it was the worse case he had seen in the past 25 years.

"Cayley, who is my youngest daughter, is just 18 months old and in that time she has suffered four chest infections and I am sure it is because of the damp conditions."

Speaking about Amy's injuries, Mrs Davidson added: "She's going to be OK, but she is still has a lot of pain in her leg.

"She's not eating properly and neither of us has slept much since she got out of hospital and since it happened.

"So it can't be doing her or any of us any good to be living in such conditions."

A Medway Council spokesman said: "There are plans to carry out maintenance work throughout the whole of Keswick Court, including the replacement of drainpipes, improving protection from rain.

"During the council's last visit to this property the problem was diagnosed as condensation and the tenant was given advice and information.

"Council staff also fitted an extractor fan, improved loft insulation and removed any mould."

Housing officers plan to visit the property again this week.

The spokesman added: "The housing service has seen a significant rise in damp and mould problems this year as a result of the very wet weather."
