Witnesses said nine police cars, a van and an ambulance were at the scene yesterday.

One man, who did not wish to be named, was walking his dog along Richmond Road when he heard sirens.

Police at the scene on the junction of Saunders Street and Richmond Road, Gillingham

As he passed the house at the junction of Saunders Street he saw the emergency services.

He said: "Somebody said a young lady had been stabbed.

"There's always something going on here.

"Only the other week, police were up here on something else."

Victoria Kirtley, of Saunders Street, said: "I saw around nine police cars at around 5.20pm and they stayed there all night.

"It's quite scary considering that I live up the road."

She said she had seen a Jeep-style police car and two ambulances.

Forensics at the scene

Peter Hassan, 41, who lives a few doors away in Richmond Road said he returned home from work at about 6.30pm and saw four police cars and two ambulances.

The father-of-five said: "I don't know what happened or who lives there.

"I have lived here three years and can't wait to move out. There is always something going on. I just come home, close the doors and pull the blinds."

A property at the junction with Saunders Street remains cordoned off this morning.

Last night's death is the latest serious incident to happen in the area.

On October 6, 2017, Kyle Yule, 17, was stabbed in a gang attack in East Street, Gillingham. He died in hospital the following day.

Just last month – on Friday, December 20 – Anthony Eastwood was stabbed to death in Fox Street, Gillingham. A teenager has been charged with his murder.
