Work on a new development of 237 homes is under way.

The new homes will be a mix of town houses and apartments, and are located off Gillingham Gate Road and Dynamo Way, in Gillingham.

Work on a new development for 237 home is underway

Peel L&P is building the development – known as Cavalier Court – on behalf of Legal & General Affordable Homes (LGAH) as part of its wider Chatham Waters regeneration.

The aim is to create a new community close to the river, providing accommodation for families as well as meeting housing needs.

The first of two buildings is now built up to roof level.

There will be 139 homes available for shared ownership with LGAH so buyers can buy a portion of a property while paying rent on the remainder each month.

The buyer can increase the percentage that they own up to 100% by buying further shares if they want to.

The other 98 homes will be for affordable rent.

The first building is all shared ownership homes and is due for completion by the end of this year.

More shared ownership units, as well as the affordable rent homes, will be in the second building which is set to be finished next spring.

There will be balconies, private and communal gardens, and a nearby green space.

There will also be onsite bike storage and electric vehicle charging points to encourage residents to use sustainable methods of transport, and solar panels will be included to help generate the building’s electricity.

More than £120m has been invested in the area by Peel L&P and around 750 full-time jobs have been created.

James Whittaker, Peel L&P’s executive director of development said: “These new affordable homes are part of our ambition for Chatham Waters to provide local people with better affordable housing choices surrounded by nature and we’re pleased to see the building progress through our local contractor O’Halloran & O’Brien.

“We’ve made significant financial contributions to improve health, education, roads, transport and sports facilities.

"We’re keen to ensure people are well-connected to open space throughout Chatham Waters and it’s already proving to be a popular place to live with homes at the nearby The Kell and The Manica fully sold or let.”

Ben Denton, legal and general affordable homes chief executive said: “At Legal & General Affordable Homes, we believe that everyone deserves a safe and secure place to call their home.

"Cavalier Court will provide a great selection of affordable rented and Shared Ownership homes for the local community."
