The major rebuild of the emergency department at Medway hospital entered a new phase this week with the delivery of the pre-constructed building modules for the new facility.

The building work is part of the £18m rebuilding and refurbishment project to update A&E, substantially increasing its capacity and providing a better environment.

The pre-constructed modules are being brought from Hull along the streets of Gillingham and then lowered into place piece by piece by crane.

They started arriving on site yesterday and will continue until the end of the month.

To ensure ambulances are not delayed when the crane is in operation, traffic around the back of Medway hospital will be running in two directions. A small number of staff parking bays around one end of the hospital have been suspended to provide extra road width.

Facilities manager Claire Lowe said: “The temporary traffic controls around parts of our site are very straightforward and will be clearly indicated, but we are asking staff and visitors to make sure that they follow directions.

“We recommend that anyone coming to the hospital by car should leave sufficient time before their appointment to find a parking space.”
