A new Turkish restaurant is opening in a former Chiquito a year after the Mexican chain closed the branch.

Turkuaz has taken over the empty unit, in Chariot Way, Medway Valley Leisure Park, Strood.

Chiquito closed its doors on May 27, 2023, after it was understood the business could not extend its lease.

Last year, it was revealed The Restaurant Group, which owns the Mexican-themed chain along with Frankie & Benny's and Wagamama, would be shutting 35 outlets.

The decision was blamed on a "tough macroeconomic environment" for the hospitality industry.

The restaurant, opposite Cineworld, has sat empty ever since but has recently undergone a makeover and had a fresh lick of paint.

Branding for Turkuaz, which says it will offer authentic Turkish cuisine, has gone up and work seemed to be going on inside the building yesterday (Monday, May 6).

However, an opening date has not yet been confirmed.

Online, the new eatery has teased it is “coming soon”.
