Medway is to get a new secondary school.

Plans for Leigh Academy Rainham have been approved for construction north of Westmoor Farm, Moor Road.

Medway Council planning members accepted the proposal last night.

Developers and the academy trust behind the project asked for public opinions last July.

Previous plans for development in this area had been refused over environmental concerns.

Medway Council's head of planning Dave Harris said: "Impact on the heritage of the area has been very carefully considered.

"Climate change and the importance of trees have never been as important as it is now.

"The Department of Education has identified the need for two more schools in the Medway area."

The school is set to open in September 2021. It will have 1,150 pupils by 2027 and 120 staff.

Carl Guerin-Hassett, who will be principal there, said: "We are thrilled to have had Medway Council's approval for Leigh Academy, Rainham.

"I find the prospect of being instrumental in raising aspirations and attainment in this community enormously exciting and look forward to welcoming our first students."

The main contractor, Bowmer and Kirkland, intends to keep the community informed on progress through regular newsletters.
