Staff at a cathedral are over the moon after astronomically boosting visitor numbers.

Rochester Cathedral has been hosting a seven-metre replica of the moon as part of a special exhibition.

The inflatable art installation was created using high definition lunar imagery from NASA.

As part of the three week-long exhibition, the cathedral is also hosting a number of events including concerts, craft sessions and special evening openings.

In the first 12 days of opening, the cathedral has seen 75,000 people come through its doors, which is up from 7,000 during the same time last year.

Simon Lace, the cathedral's chapter clerk, said: "As of yesterday afternoon, it was about 75,000 in 12 days.

"The feedback is amazing, absolutely fantastic.

"We have had a couple of complaints from people who don't think it's appropriate but that's only a couple out of 75,000.

"Everyone I have spoken to has said how wonderful it is.

"It's amazing to see so many happy people and we had lots of families in for half term last week."

Last year, the cathedral hosting the Knife Angel, a 25ft-high statue made of 100,000 confiscated knives, which was visited by over 44,000 people.

Visitors were also able to take part in a crazy golf course in the summer, which saw over 29,000 visit.

The Museum of the Moon is at Rochester Cathedral until Wednesday, March 4.
