Drivers using the Medway Tunnel have been fined more than 1,000 times in the past year.

A request made under the Freedom of Information Act revealed between October 4, 2016 and October 4, 2017 that 1,333 fines were issued.

The fastest speed recorded was a police car travelling at 110 miles per hour as part of an emergency response – the fastest non emergency vehicle was 89mph.

Cameras were installed in June 2016 but didn't became operational until October, with 545 tickets issued in the first month.

Responding to the numbers, leader of the Labour group, Vince Maple said: “It’s important to remember road safety is everyone’s responsibility and for an area like the Medway Tunnel, which is an important piece of our infrastructure, we want to ensure it is a safe highway.

“I hope people would hear the statistics and realise we need to do more to ensure those breaking the law are held to account through speeding fines or awareness courses.

“In the first month more than 30% of tickets were issued which shows that people do see their actions are held to account if they break the law. It is right and proper they do that.”

The 10 cameras cost £137,836.59 to install outside of the tunnel to enforce the 50mph speed limit in both directions.
