A temporary art exhibition in a public area has been branded "distressing" by one visitor who will challenge Medway Council over its appropriateness.

Last month, work by the satirical artist Cold War Steve was displayed at the Riverside Country Park in Rainham.

But it seems not everyone enjoyed the 11 pieces, which depict leading politicians including Boris Johnson, Matt Hancock, Priti Patel, and other public figures in offbeat and surreal surroundings.

A public question submitted by Gary Graham is due to be heard at a meeting of Medway councillors this Thursday.

In his question, directed towards Cllr Howard Doe (Con), portfolio holder for housing and community services, he will say: "Who sanctioned the applying political, inappropriate and quite frankly distressing art on Saxon Way/Riverside Gillingham?"

Mr Graham will go on to say: "Please if you are using my money to fund such ridiculous projects give me a rebate or better still improve your support services during the present crisis."

Upon the release of the agenda on Medway Council's website, the artist - who has exhibitied at Glastonbury Festival and is currently undertaking a nationwide tour - responded on Twitter to say the exhibition wasn't funded by taxpayers or the council.

Bosses at the council were hoping the outdoor display would contribute towards their bid for City of Culture in 2025.

Mr Graham possibly wasn't the only person disappointed with the art. During its run one of the pieces had to be fished out of the River Medway after it was removed from its display board.
