Motorists were hit with fines after leaving their vehicles in a free car park on Remembrance Sunday.

But owners of the lot in Rhode Street, Chatham, have confirmed it was a technical glitch and any tickets sent out will be cancelled, or refunded if they have already been paid.

Terance Butler Holdings director Paul Graham was made aware of the incident on Tuesday afternoon and has been working since to correct the mistake.

The property development company owns the car park, which is run by YourParkingSpace, and was offering free parking on November 13 so people could attend the Remembrance Parade in town.

But a technical glitch meant an unknown number of drivers were sent parking tickets and fines in the post for not paying.

Mr Graham said: "As a company we are very upset about it. We wanted to help with the parade and do our neighbourly good bit.

"We will make sure that everyone is refunded and get all the tickets quashed. I am dealing with it and have gone back to the parking company who sent out the tickets.

"We are very sorry for the inconvenience. It was not our intention. Our intention was to give everyone free parking for the parade. We will put it right."

Letters are being sent out to everyone who received a ticket revoking it in the next week or so.
