A former golf course and sports complex could be transformed into a new community park.

Medway Council is proposing to turn Deangate Ridge, in Hoo, into parkland as part of its plans to improve residents’ access to greenspaces.

The project would provide new public access to the site, in Dux Court Road, and create a substantial open space of at least 43 hectares.

Plans include picnic areas, improved access to viewpoints across the grasslands, woodland areas and open meadows, paths for residents and dog walkers and new signs providing information about the habitats in the area.

It comes as the government decided to withdraw the £170 million programme of Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF) support.

But the local authority has said it is committed to delivering environmental improvements on the peninsula and is looking at alternative funding options for this project.

The council is now asking people to have their say on the proposals and consultation will run from Friday, August 11 and closes at midnight on Friday, September 22.

The future of the site has been speculated for a number of years

Medway Council’s portfolio holder for climate change and regeneration, Cllr Simon Curry, said: “We know how important greenspaces are for the health and wellbeing of our residents and I am delighted that we are launching a consultation on our plans to create a new community parkland at Deangate.

“Ecological studies have found that Deangate Ridge is home to a wide range of wildlife including, pipistrelle bats and slow worms, and it is very important that we protect the habitats of these species.

“We are committed to establishing new parks and improving residents’ access to greenspaces. The proposed new parkland would benefit residents of the Hoo Peninsula and across Medway.

Plans have been revealed for the former sports complex

“It will provide access to greenspace for people of all ages and abilities, as well as protect our local wildlife, and I would encourage residents to have their say on these exciting plans.”

Three events will be held for people to view the plans with the first taking place at High Halstow Community Hall on Tuesday, August 29, between 4pm and 9pm. More information can be found at medway.gov.uk/Deangate.

The others will be arranged in September with details to be confirmed at a later date.
